It should not be a surprise to anyone reading this that the accident rate for civilian helicopters is slightly higher than for fixed-wing aircraft, according to the NTSB. The safety agency placed helicopter operations on its “Ten Most Wanted” list in 2014. The accident rate for all aircraft—including helicopters—is 7.28 crashes for every 100,000 hours of flight time.

There are several key questions that need to be addressed when choosing the right autopilot for your aircraft. In general they come down to your typical mission profile, what kind of aircraft you fly, what equipment is available for your aircraft, and of course your budget. The amount of VFR flying you do as opposed to IFR flying is also an important consideration.
