It's about the benefits an autopilot brings to VFR-only airplane pilots, and I expect to receive more than the normal amount of emails in response because, put simply, autopilots can be an even bigger benefit to VFR helicopter pilots.

Dear Santa,
What I want for Christmas this year is for you to be able to fly safer and a lot more aware of obstacles along your route. I know how hard it is to meet your one-day-a-year delivery schedule; always flying at night, down low and in all kinds of weather. You, my dear jolly ‘ol elf are no doubt the original “scud runner.”

It should not be a surprise to anyone reading this that the accident rate for civilian helicopters is slightly higher than for fixed-wing aircraft, according to the NTSB. The safety agency placed helicopter operations on its “Ten Most Wanted” list in 2014. The accident rate for all aircraft—including helicopters—is 7.28 crashes for every 100,000 hours of flight time.
